What's New on This Site
  • At the invitation of Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw, we will be gone from June 28 through July 7 teaching the first five days of the 4-month retreat at the Forest Refuge. This includes a dharma talk, Q&A, and interviews with retreatants. The Sayadaw has informed us that he will be present while we offer our talks. We will humbly offer what we have learned as a "warm up" to the Sayadaw's teachings at the retreat. We will not be filling orders or responding to emails during this time.
  • Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw has recently announced that he is officially authorizing us to teach the Samatha practice, as he taught it to us.
  • Our book, Jhanas Advice from Two Spiritual Friends, is now available. In the first 2 months, people from 18 countries have ordered a total of about 130 books. To order, go to the Books Page.
  • Our latest dharma talk can be downloaded for free from our Talks page.
  • You can now register on the Events Page for our upcoming day-long, From First Sit to First Jhana--Navigating the Proccess  of Purification of Mind through the Use of Wise Effort, to be held on Saturday, Nov. 8.
  • We are available by invitation to teach at your retreat center. If you are interested in organizing a retreat, please contact us.

What is the Jhana Practice?

The jhana practice is an ancient type of concentration meditation that predates written history as a method to purify the mind. It was taught to the Buddha by his teachers, and he practiced and taught the jhanas throughout his life. This practice was so important to him, that jhana meditation was his last act before he died.

Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw of Burma is considered by many to be the leading Buddhist jhana teacher alive today. Tina Rasmussen and Stephen Snyder were taught personally by the Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw, who has authorized them to teach the Samatha practices of concentration, as he taught it to them. They have recently completed the book Jhanas Advice from Two Spiritual Friends, an accessible and direct experiential account of jhana practice. Their book has been endorsed by the Sayadaw.

They now offer several services to practitioners interested in the jhana practice. Their services are for both experienced meditators interested in deepening their concentration practice, as well as new meditators beginning a concentration practice. They offer:
- Workshops / jhana practice group
- Dharma talks at your location
- One-on-one spiritual guidance
- Free downloads of dharma talks on the jhanas practice
- The new book,
Jhanas Advice from Two Spiritual Friends:
Concentration Meditation as Taught by Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw
